The ECG Interpretation course is intended for health care providers desiring to learn basic ECG interpretation and for current providers who wish to strengthen their ECG skills. This is an excellent prep course for the NCLEX Exam, ACLS and PALS.
The ECG & Cardiac Medications Course addresses a key knowledge gap in electrocardiogram (ECG) and pharmacology, and focuses on specific ECG recognition skills and drug treatment knowledge. The course is a pre-course option for ACLS students and other healthcare providers, or is also intended for ACLS students who complete ACLS pre-course self-assessment and find they need to improve their knowledge.
Course Description Details and Objectives
- Anatomy: basic anatomy including the heart, valves, blood vessels, conduction system
- Electrophysiology: depolarization and repolarization
- ECG-complexes: P wave, PQ interval, QRS complex, ST segment, T wave, J point
- Leads and electrodes: Definitions, electrical principles, lead placement
- Electrical axis of the heart: Variants, clinical relevance, determination of the electrical heart axis
- Determination of rate: Determination of bradycardia, tachycardia, regular and irregular rhythm
- Bundle branch blocks: LBBB, RBBB, incomplete block, effect on heart axis, ECG criteria
- Premature complexes: Premature atrial, junctional and ventricular complexes, ventricular multigeminy
- Ventricular complexes: Ventricular escape complexes, run of PVC’s, sustained/non-sustained VT
- Rhythm analysis: Sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, VT, torsades de pointes, VF, blocks
- Ischemia and infarction: Q waves, T wave abnormalities, R progression, STT abnormalities
This course begins with a discussion of the physiology of cardiac conduction, and then covers the basics of how to read an ECG strip, and the normal components of the EKG waveform. We will then examine basic cardiac dysrhythmias, including atrial and ventricular dysrhythmias, and blocks. Finally, selected nursing diagnoses for patients with dysrhythmias will be offered, along with suggested associated nursing interventions.
Upon completion of this program the student should be able to:
- Identify basic normal EKG waveform morphology
- Describe the normal physiology of cardiac conduction.
- Distinguish between dysrhythmias
- Describe the physiological consequences and treatments of these dysrhythmias
ECG • Heart anatomy • Basic electrophysiology • Normal ECG measurements • Basic arrhythmias Pharmacology • Basic ACLS drugs and usage • Drugs, doses and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies • Integrating basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms • Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke
Classroom-based (instructor and media. Course length is 6.5-8.0 hours.
• Focus on critical ECG etiology, interpretation and treatment • Flexible instructional format • Student reference material is included with illustrations to be used during and after the course • Open forum discussions to reinforce proficiency • Classroom-based for learners who prefer group interaction and instructor feedback.
Upon successful course completion, review and a written test, students receive an ECG Course Completion Certificate.
Continuing Education Accreditation – Emergency Medical Services and Board of Registered Nursing. This continuing education activity is approved by the BRN, an organization accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS) and Board of Registered Nursing, for 6.5 Advanced CEHs.
Q: When will I receive the certificate?
A: You will receive your certificate upon course completion (if paid by check, your certificate will be mailed or ready for pick up after 3 days).
